my 5 Favourite chrome extensions

Google chrome is quick, efficient, and web developers like the way it has introduced easy css debugging thanks to the right click "inspect element". My favourite extensions include

Pimcore and ZOOLU

2 opensource content management systems that rely on Zend  Framework. while it's now hard to compete with the amount of features natively available in big players like wordpress, joomla or drupal, a  good web site developer should stay informed as various project come online.

Zoolu and Pimcore both rely on Zend Framework, which makes them not simple to install, especially Zoolu whose requirement list is very long. But at that price you get full lucene support, the very powerful search engine supported by the zend framework. Pimcore is not easy to install either but promises to be a full rapid development framework.

WordPress Gallery plugins

If, instead of switching your worpdress image portfolios to advanced plugins like nextgen, you decide to stick to the original but imperfect native wordprfess gallery, you have a lot of solutions

  • Exclude images from gallery in posts allows you to use only a specific set of post images for a post. works by adding a function to impages, that allow to exclude this image from the gallery without deleting it from the post, allowing the insertion somewhere else. Note that this plugin does not use the exclude tag, but it stores a meta data in the database for each image, and filters the gallery output to exclude or not each image from the gallery. Only works for a single gallery, but very efficient.
  • AutoNav Graphical Navigation and Gallery Plugin : a good plugin for displaying thumbnails of subpages, a good way of implementing visual subpage navigation
  • Galleria plugin is a nice way of implementing slideshows

2 wordpress plugins for displaying magento products

We tested and recommend 2 plugins for displaying feeds on wordpress.

  • Simplepie plugin for wordpress (requires simplepie core) is definitely a winner as it handles feed caching, alleviating load on your feed server, in our case a magento ecommerce installation that provides specific categories product feed. Simple pie plugin also handles various configuration goodies including a powerful HTML template system stored in files. Only drawback of this plugin is that it is quite old and does not handle widgets, has to be hardcoded in your wordpress theme (check out the documentation for more information)
  • jRSS widget is less featured but comes with a nice jquery based scroll that displays one item out of your feed, and is widgetized. on the other hand, does not handle caching so be careful is the target website has a lot of hits, can be a load on the source website.

I have put these two plugins to work  on, dedicated bathroom website.
